September is Animal Pain Awareness Month

The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management has designated September as Pain Awareness Month. The failure to recognize pain especially chronic pain is a common problem by professionals and caretakers.

Acute or sudden pain such as a broken foot is easy to recognize because our pet is holding a foot and will not walk on the foot. Chronic pain or pain that develops slowly is not always as easy to recognize. Signs of chronic pain are often easily justified away as being due to other causes. The two most common sources of chronic pain that are ignored and justified away is joint pain and tooth pain.

Often joint pain is justified away with one of the following statements:
1. My pet is slowing down because of his age.

2. He does not jump or play like he uses to because he has a touch of arthritis.

3. He slow or has difficulty getting up but he still chases squirrels.

Our pets are like us in many of us they will attempt to continue to try to adjust to compensate for the pain. They may even override the pain to chase a squirrel.

Often mouth pain is justified away with one of the following statements:
1. He does not appear to behave in trouble eating.

2. He just finicky when it comes to eating.

Dogs and cats are geared to eat because eating is part of surviving. How many have continued to eat in spit of sore gums or painful teeth?
Anything that causes us pain will cause our pets pain. So what should I watch for to know if my pet is in pain?
