Many of birds have bands around their leg when they become part of a household. These bands are usually placed on the birds for identification purposes by breeders and pet stores. Once the bird become part of our household the metal bands serve no purpose. While many birds never have problems with these bands we frequently see injury and damage to the leg from these bands. These injuries range from minor injury such as skin swelling and damage to major injury resulting in loss of toes or even the entire foot. These injuries are frequent enough that we recommend removal of all leg bands for your bird safety.
